Zutari: Co-creating an engineered impact.

Zutari is a well-established, management-owned engineering firm with almost 90 years' experience. As human-centred engineering consultants and advisors, we are trusted by our clients, business partners, communities and other stakeholders across Africa.

We co-create engineering solutions that have a positive impact and improve people's lives. Zutari values inclusion and recognises the importance of a diverse, talented workforce, believing that people need other people to succeed.

What kind of talent do we pursue?

We employ people with the right attitude and a positive mindset, who are motivated by doing the right thing, getting things done and share a sense of urgency. People who have an impact in our teams and broader community. People who think differently and connect with those around them to co-create new opportunities and leave a meaningful legacy.

Role responsibilities

  • Deliver structural engineering design tasks for built environment and/or industrial projects under the guidance of a senior engineer, from concept through detailed design and construction support.
  • Perform structural analysis and design for reinforced concrete and structural steel elements (and post-tensioned elements where exposure/competence exists) in accordance with applicable codes, standards and project specifications.
  • Apply client standards and relevant design codes to develop safe, buildable and efficient structural solutions, escalating uncertainties or missing information to the project lead.
  • Prepare design documentation and outputs (calculations, reports, mark-ups and sketches) that clearly communicate engineering intent and support approvals, tendering and construction.
  • Develop structural analysis models and run design checks (software-based and hand checks where appropriate) to support design delivery.
  • Coordinate with drafters/BIM modellers by providing clear mark-ups and inputs to support drawing and reinforcement detailing production.
  • Assist with multi-disciplinary coordination by responding to interface queries and sharing required information with architectural, façade, civil, geotechnical and MEP teams.
  • Support construction-phase activities such as responding to technical queries/RFIs and assisting with site inspections/observations where required.
  • Manage own task deliverables by planning work, providing progress updates, and meeting agreed deadlines.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by applying lessons learned, using templates/tools, and adopting efficient ways of working.

Minimum requirements

  • BSc or BEng in Civil/Structural Engineering from a recognised institution (postgraduate qualification advantageous).
  • Typically 3–7 years relevant structural engineering experience within the built environment and/or industrial/heavy engineering environments.
  • Professional registration not required (ECSA candidacy or working towards registration is advantageous).
  • Demonstrated experience delivering structural designs and documentation for steel and concrete structures as part of a consultancy team, with the ability to work semi-autonomously on defined tasks.
  • Working knowledge of relevant design codes and standards (South African and/or Australian/New Zealand, American, European depending on project needs).
  • Proficiency in common structural analysis and design software and a good understanding of CAD/BIM workflows.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in finite element analysis (FEA) modelling and interpretation appropriate to project needs and role level.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.

Beneficial experience and competencies

  • Exposure to post-tensioned concrete design and detailing.
  • Exposure to seismic design and detailing.
  • Exposure in dynamic/vibration assessments (modal/harmonic/time-history)
  • Scripting/automation to improve productivity.

We believe that a diverse workforce is key to our business success.  We seek the best people for our jobs based on their skills, qualifications, and experience.  We embrace the principle of equal opportunity in employment and work towards eliminating all forms of unlawful discrimination in our employment practices.  In support of diversity and the equal opportunity principle, preference will be given to individuals from designated groups in South Africa.
